In the 2nd Great Ninja War. Jiraiya got the Sannin title together w/ Tsunade and Orochimaru. at Amegakure (village hidden in the rain) by Hanzo legendary warrior. He was very amused by the three of them how they survive till last in the war. and he gave them the title of The Three Legendary Sannin.

Jiraiya was killed by his own student Nagato and the (Co-Leader of the Akatsuki) technically Obito is the leader of the organization whose goal is to bring peace into the world by destroying it. Nagaoto is also known as Seven Pain. He possesses Rinneegan the legendary powers of the sage of six paths. That is how he was able to kill Jiraya.
